Exhibition Outline: With the Olympics and Paralympics coming soon, Outsider art and Art Brut started attracting people’s attention in Japan. Outsider art is produced by the artists who are not connected to the conventional art world and not bound by rules established in the history of western art. Many artists with mental and physical disabilities are consequently included in the field. In Japan, in many cases it is discussed in the context of welfare, as the art which is something pure and innocent or something we should protect and promote. However, on a global level, it has been attracting people’s attention as a concept opposite to the contemporary art which has more practical side and a big trend that makes us rethink about the art from a spiritual point of view. What is the meaning of the fact that people still try to express themselves as an independent person even in a global society?

In this field, expressing themselves is often directly linked to their life and the work is often produced alone and unaided. In order for their creations to become ‘artworks,’ involvement of a third person is required. How our exhibition has been playing the role and how this field of art has been found and developed…at the same time as looking back at the historical facts, I would like to introduce outsider artists who are active in contemporary Japan. Their creations have gone beyond the definition of purity and innocence. By exhibiting their works as art, I would like to provide an opportunity for people to question the diversity of arts that are suitable for the 21st century.
